Trump’s War on the Associated Press Suffers Major Defeat in Court

In a significant victory for the First Amendment, U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, ruled that the White House cannot exclude the Associated Press (AP) from press events. This decision comes after the AP was barred from White House coverage for refusing to comply with an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico.Federal Judge Rules Against Trump in First Amendment Victory for Associated Press

The Trump administration’s attempt to punish the AP backfired spectacularly, with even a conservative judge affirming that such retaliation violates constitutional press freedoms. Unsurprisingly, the administration has appealed the ruling—a move critics see as another attack on independent journalism (what a dick!).

Why This Ruling Matters for Democracy

A free press is the backbone of democracy, and silencing critical media is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. The Trump administration’s repeated efforts to marginalize journalists, from revoking press credentials to spreading “fake news” rhetoric, pose a direct threat to government accountability. No democracy can survive without a free press.

This case is just one of over 150 lawsuits challenging Trump’s 109 executive orders, many of which have been criticized as unconstitutional power grabs. With a congress that has no backbone, the judicial branch remains our only check on executive overreach, preventing further erosion of democratic norms.

We asked Bobby Cranston, contributor and patriot, what he thought of the ruling. His response was “we sure as shit didn’t vote for no judge, we voted for the greatest man to walk the planet since Jesus. It aint democratic. let eh man do what he wants.”

The court’s decision reaffirms a fundamental truth: No president has the authority to silence the press for unfavorable coverage. While Trump’s relentless attacks on journalism reveal his disdain for democratic principles, this ruling proves that the judiciary can still uphold constitutional rights. As legal battles against government overreach continue, protecting a free press remains essential to preserving democracy. The American people deserve transparency, not a leader who treats dissent as disobedience.
