Trump’s Authoritarian Playbook: The Erosion of US Democracy
By: Dr. X

Back in the day, before the election, one of my good friends told me he was voting for Trump. I called him an idiot (sorry for that) and lamented that he did not value our democracy. His stance was that Trump would not be able to be a dictator because of the checks and balances in place. I was right; he was obviously wrong. Donald J. Trump puts the “dick” in dictator.

Before Trump’s presidency, it was unfathomable in America that one person could decide to:

  1. Fire tens of thousands of federal employees.
  2. Dissolve longstanding government departments.
  3. Cut funding to institutions that do not support his ideas (Columbia University, for one).
  4. Deport legal residents of the USA who have not broken any laws.
  5. Deny access to members of the press who still refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of Mexico.
  6. Initiate a $200 billion+ tax hike (tariffs).
  7. Basically, eliminate DEI from anything related to the federal government.
  8. Fire prosecutors who not only tried to prosecute him, but also his financial supporters.
  9. Create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

These are just the things he has gotten away with so far. Trump has signed over 100 executive orders resulting in 130 lawsuits. Because of the lawsuits several other initiatives are being blocked by the judicial branch of government. Trump has attacked this branch and is now asking the Supreme Court to rule that lower courts do not have any jurisdiction over his actions. If they agree, Trump’s dictatorship will be complete.

The point is not to argue the merits of these nine things. The point is that one man was able to do them, unfettered, and nobody seems to care.

Congress has been silent. Both houses were controlled by the Republicans, and if Republicans want to keep their jobs, they cannot go against their leader, Trump.

Trump has been relentless in his attacks against the media. Any reporter who dares contradict him is labeled as an idiot, a moron, or stupid—and those are the nice terms he uses.

He has threatened major networks with pulling their licenses, extorted a $25 million payment from Facebook, and, as mentioned, limited access to the AP and Reuters. Trump takes a big ol’ shit on the constitution everyday and no one seems to care.

If you want to be a dictator, you have to control the press. He has been successful to a greater degree than I thought possible, especially with Fox News, OAN, and Newsmax in his back pocket. Proof?

The “scandal” that Musk “uncovered”, that non-U.S. citizens are given Social Security numbers, had Fox News going bonkers. The responsible press (and the Social Security Administration) pointed out that legal workers in the U.S. have always been given Social Security numbers so they can pay taxes, open bank accounts, and do other things required to maintain a job. I checked Fox News the day after, and there was no clarification or retraction—just silence. As a result, millions of people who only watch Fox News now think it’s wrong for non-citizens to receive Social Security numbers. The dark secret? These workers pay all the same taxes as citizens, including Social Security, but will never collect it.

Control the press, job one, then control the Universities. In the How to Start a Dictatorship playbook, these are the 2 most important steps. Cutting funding to Universities should be the domain of one individual, yet it is. Columbia University found this out, now Harvard is being looked at. People are starting to be afraid to dissent. If dissension is not allowed, we have a dictatorship.

I suppose our democracy was good while it lasted.
